This book was first published in 1938. The Institute reprinted this work in 1963 and again in 1985. Due to popular demand, the book was reprinted in 1995.

The author of this book, the late Dastur Dr Maneckji Nusservanji Dhalla, Ph.D., Litt.D. was educated in India and later studied at Columbia University under the late Prof A V W Jackson. He returned to India to be ordained the High Priest of Sind and Baluchistan with his seat at Karachi.

The book is divided into different periods on a linguistic basis commencing with the pre-Gathic period (from earliest times to 1000 B.C.) followed by the Gathic (circa 1000B.C.), Avestan (circa 800 B.C. to 200 A.D.), Pahlavi (3rd to 9th century), Periods of Decadence (7th to 18th century) and Revival (19th century onwards.)

This work is an expansion of Dr Dhalla’s earlier book, Zoroastrian Theology from the Earliest Times to the Present Day (1914.)
